The best time to visit Sri Lanka's south coast

The best time to visit Sri Lanka's south coast is December to April: the dry season, when the sea is calm, the surf is clean, the whales are off Mirissa, and the days run sunny and hot with evenings soft enough for dinner outdoors. The peak inside the peak is mid-December to March.

But Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite corners, which means some part of the island is in season all year, and the south coast's own green months have real appeal at much gentler prices. Here is the year as it actually behaves on this stretch of coast.

The year, month by month

December to March is the classic run: dry, bright, seas calm enough for whale boats and small children, and every kitchen on the coast open. April stays hot and mostly dry, with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in the middle of the month, a genuine festival worth being here for. May to September is the southwest monsoon, which on this coast means green land, warm rain arriving in loud, short episodes, bigger seas, and long clear stretches in between; it is the surfers' rawer season and the best-value months for a villa taken whole. October and November are the turn, unsettled early and steadily improving, with November often quietly excellent.

What the monsoon does and does not mean

The word suggests weeks of grey; the reality on the south coast is warm, dramatic and intermittent. Rain tends to come hard and pass, the temperature barely moves off thirty degrees, and the landscape goes an implausible green. What genuinely changes is the ocean: open beaches take surf and current, and swimming moves to the sheltered corners such as Hiriketiya's inner bay. For a party planning a chef, a pool and a hill of its own, the green season is less a compromise than a different, quieter register of the same place.

Getting here from the airport

Colombo's Bandaranaike airport sits north of the city, and the drive south is simpler than the map suggests: the Southern Expressway carries you most of the way in about three hours, and the last stretch runs on coast roads to the hill, three and a quarter hours door to door in normal traffic. The villa sends a car and driver to the arrivals hall, with a stop wherever suits (Galle for lunch is the classic), and the same driver stays with you for the week. Night arrivals are routine; the staff simply hold dinner.
