Where is Hiriketiya?
Hiriketiya is on Sri Lanka's south coast, immediately south of Dikwella town in the Southern Province, about 200 km from Colombo. The drive from Colombo airport takes around 3 hours 15 minutes, most of it on the Southern Expressway.
When is the best time to visit Hiriketiya?
December to April is the dry season, with the most reliable sun and clean, small surf; it is also the busiest period. November and May are good-value shoulders. The southwest monsoon runs roughly May to September, greener and quieter, with rain arriving in bursts rather than all day.
Is Hiriketiya good for beginner surfers?
Yes. The wave in the middle of the bay is one of the most forgiving learner waves on the south coast: sandy-bottomed, slow, and waist-to-chest high on most days in season. Boards and instructors are available on the sand, and the villa can arrange lessons in advance.
Can you swim at Hiriketiya?
Yes, inside the horseshoe the bay takes most of the power out of the swell, and the inner half is calm enough for confident children on most dry-season days. Stay away from the point, where the surf breaks over rock, and treat the sea with the usual respect in monsoon months.
How far is Kottamba Kanda from Hiriketiya beach?
Four minutes on foot. The villa stands on the hill directly above the bay; you walk down the lane to the sand and back up again without a car. It is close enough to go down twice a day and high enough that the bay's noise never reaches the garden.
