The bay

Surfing Hiriketiya

Hiriketiya holds two waves in one small bay: a soft, sandy beach break in the middle that may be the best learner wave on Sri Lanka's south coast, and a faster left-hander that peels off the rocks at the point for surfers who already know their way around a reef. The season runs November to April, when the offshore mornings are clean and the swell stays in the waist-to-head-high range most days.

The villa stands four minutes' walk above the lineup, which changes what a surf trip feels like: no van, no schedule, just a look at the water from the hill and a decision.

The two waves

The middle of the horseshoe is where people learn: a sand-bottomed peak that rolls rather than pitches, slow enough to forgive a late pop-up and shallow enough to stand between sets. Instructors work it every morning in season, and by mid-morning it carries a cheerful crowd of first-timers. The point is a different animal: a left that breaks over reef and rock along the bay's western arm, quicker and shallower, at its best around mid tide on a clean south-west swell. It is not a heavy wave by world standards, but it rewards surfers who can read it and punishes those who cannot.

When to paddle out

First light is the bay at its best: glassy, offshore, and thin of people. In the November to April season the pattern is remarkably steady, with clean mornings, an onshore ruffle by early afternoon, and a softer evening session as the wind dies. The monsoon months from May to September bring bigger and less mannered surf; experienced surfers find good days in it, but learners do better waiting for the season, or taking the calmer inside waves on the smaller days.

Beyond the bay

When Hiriketiya is crowded or the swell outgrows it, the coast obliges in both directions. Within half an hour sit a string of alternatives, from gentle beach breaks off Talalla's long sand to reef points around Tangalle that rarely see a crowd, and the villa's driver knows the morning circuit. Boards travel in the car, and the chef's breakfast waits for whichever bay wins.

Common questions

Is Hiriketiya good for beginner surfers?

Yes, genuinely. The mid-bay beach break is soft, sandy and slow, which is why Hiriketiya has become one of the south coast's favourite places to learn. Lessons and board hire are available on the sand, and the villa can book instructors it rates in advance.

When is the surf season in Hiriketiya?

November to April brings the clean season: offshore mornings, organised swell and easy sizes. May to September is the southwest monsoon, with bigger and rougher water better suited to experienced surfers picking their days.

What is the Hiriketiya point break like?

A left-hander peeling over reef and rock off the bay's western arm, best around mid tide. It is quick without being heavy, suits confident intermediates and up, and gets the best of the morning before the wind turns.

Do I need to bring my own surfboard to Hiriketiya?

No. Board hire in and around the bay covers everything from soft-tops to shortboards, and the villa can have boards brought to the house for the length of your stay so the walk down is hands-free.

Are there other surf spots near Hiriketiya?

Yes. Within 30 minutes are the beach breaks of Talalla and Dickwella and quieter reef and point setups towards Tangalle. When the bay is crowded or the swell is wrong, the driver runs a morning circuit until somewhere looks right.
