Mirissa, forty minutes' drive west of Kottamba Kanda, is where Sri Lanka's south coast goes to sea for whales. The season runs November to April, boats leave the harbour around half past six in the morning, and the animal everyone is out there for is the blue whale, the largest creature that has ever lived, feeding in the deep water that runs close to this coast.
Sperm whales, Bryde's whales, spinner dolphins in their hundreds, and the occasional orca fill out the cast. The season sits exactly inside the villa's own high season, which makes this the easiest of the big trips to say yes to.

The continental shelf runs unusually close to Sri Lanka's southern tip, which means the deep water where blue whales feed lies within a morning's sail of the beach. Few places on earth put the largest animal in history this near a harbour. The whales pass and feed here through the northeast-monsoon months, and on a good December morning the question is usually not whether you will see one but how many.
The car leaves the villa a little before six with breakfast packed. Boats clear the harbour by seven and motor out to the shipping-lane depths, where the spotters read the water for blows. When a blue whale surfaces it is unmistakable even at distance: a blow like a geyser, an impossibly long back, and, if you are lucky, the tail fluke lifted clean as it dives. Dolphins usually escort some part of the trip. Most boats are back in the harbour by late morning, and you are at the villa's pool by lunch.
Whale watching done badly means a scrum of boats crowding an animal that would rather be feeding. Done well, it means operators who follow the guidelines: slow approaches, respectful distances, engines idled, and no chasing a diving whale. The villa books the operators who work that way, and for parties who want the deck to themselves a private charter costs less than most people expect and removes the crowd entirely. Take the seasickness tablets at breakfast, not on the boat; the swell is real even in season.
